Millennium Hotel<\/strong> Biltmore in Tbilisi<\/strong> to Face PETA Protest<\/strong> together with the \"Georgian Society for the Protection and Safety of Animals\" (GSPSA)<\/strong> Over Iditarod Ties<\/strong><\/p>\n

Because Millennium Hotels<\/strong><\/a> and Resorts still sponsors the Iditarod<\/strong><\/a>\u2014in which more than 150 dogs have died\u2014activists from the GSPRA in support of the PETA international campaign<\/a> will protest infront of the Biltmore hotel<\/a> holding posters with the \u201cMillhell<\/em>ium\u201d logo and pictures, showing the cruelty of the dog race in Alaska.<\/p>\n

The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is an annual long-distance sled dog race run in early March from Anchorage to Nome, entirely within the US state of Alaska. Mushers and a team of 14 dogs, of which at least 5 must be on the towline at the finish line, cover the distance in 8\u201315 days or more. The Iditarod began in 1973 as an event to test the best sled dog mushers and teams but evolved into today's highly competitive race, where many dogs die, get injured or are killed.<\/p>\n

Dogs in the Iditarod are forced to race against their will.\u00a0 No dog would ever choose to run to their death.\u00a0 They\u2019re not Super Dogs \u2013 they\u2019re not indestructible pieces of sporting equipment. They\u2019re just like any other dogs who only want to live and enjoy loving companionship. But the Iditarod continues to push them beyond their capabilities, and as a result, dogs continue to suffer and die.<\/p>\n

A PETA investigator worked at two dog kennels owned by former Iditarod champions and found widespread neglect and suffering. Dogs were denied veterinary care for painful injuries, kept constantly chained next to dilapidated boxes and plastic barrels in the bitter cold and biting wind, and forced to run even when they were exhausted and dehydrated<\/p>\n
