On April 4, 2011, the Stray Animals Day, the leaders of Georgia’s animal defense non-governmental organizations: “Georgian Society for the Protection and Safety of Animals – GSPSA”, “Tamaz Elizbarashvili's Association for the Rescue and Protection of dogs”and “Georgian Society for the Protection of Animals” signed a Memorandum of Cooperation and Understanding.
By signing the document, the leaders of the animal defense organizations: Teimuraz Tsikoridze – “Georgian Society for the Protection and Safety of Animals – GSPSA”, Tamaz Elizbarashvili “Tamaz Elizbarashvili's Association for the Rescue and Protection of dogs” – and Vakhtang Mamaladze –“Georgian Society for the Protection of Animals” certified close cooperation in the field of animal protection, rescue, and animal rights advocacy. The main goals are to create more favourable environment for animals, prevent cruelty to animals, encourage the government to improve the legislation in this field, provide veterinary service, raise public awareness and promote establishment of humane attitude to animals.
It is noteworthy that the Memorandum was signed on April 4, the Stray Animals Day(http://www.strayanimalsday.org), which is an important symbolic fact. At the demonstration dedicated to the Stray Animals Day the leaders of the animal defense organizations urged the international community to animal support.
The Memorandum signed by the organizations proves that the movement of animal defenders is entering a new phase, which is an important fact from an international perspective.
