The first celebration of the World Stray Animals Day was held in Georgia on April 4, 2011 under the aegis of the non-governmental animal protection organizations of Georgia – “Georgian Society for the Protection and Safety of Animals”- GSPSA, “Tamaz Elizbarashvili's Association for the Rescue and Protection of dogs” and “Georgian Society for the Protection of Animals” ( http://www.strayanimalsday.org/).
A peaceful action of animal defenders was held on that day in the Capital of Georgia – Tbilisi – near the Vazha Pshavela monument.
Participants of the action stated their sympathy towards more than one billion of homeless animals and urged the World society to support, care for and help the stray animals. The participants of the action also signed an Appeal to World Society.
A memorandum on Mutual Cooperation was signed on April 4 action by the leaders of the non-governmental organizations: Teimuraz Tsikoridze of “Georgian Society for the Protection and Safety of Animals”, Tamaz Elizbarashvili of “Tamaz Elizbarashvili's Association for the Rescue and Protection of dogs” and Vakhtang Mamaladze of “Georgian Society for the Protection of Animals”.
It should be noted that a representative of Tbilisi City Hall, Mr. Davit Sadaterashvili, took part in the Stray Animals Day action. Mr. Sadaterashvili spoke to the action participants and supported their Appeal.
A photo gallery of animal refuge inhabitants and other stray animals was organized at the April 4 event. Refuge inhabitants and stray animals were also brought to the action venue. Animal defenders collected monetary funds, foods and medicines for support of homeless animals.
From animal protection viewpoint, the April 4 action was the most scaled one in Georgia and was notable for the participants’ unanimity and firmness.
